The popular holiday resort of Novigrad is about 20 km from the Slovenian border. The old town was originally on an island that was connected to the mainland in the 18th century. It preserves its medieval structure with parts of the town wall, the basilica and a town loggia in Gothic style. Unlike most other coastal towns, fishing still plays an important role in Novigrad. Numerous fishing boats dominate the image of the harbour. Freshly caught fish is therefore always on offer in the surrounding restaurants.
Novigrad is a nice end to a day trip through the Istrian hinterland with Motuvun and Grožnjan.
